As far as I'm aware there isn't any official documentation.

Have a look at settings/workflow.ini - you'll have to uncomment out the required AvailableOperationList[] line to get the workflow event to appear in the list.

According to the changelog this did in fact make it into 4.2, but I can't figure out for the life of me how to set up a workflow when a user activates his account. All I'm really trying to do is create a folder for the newly activated user that he can create content in.

Do you know if there's any documentation anywhere on this? I don't see it in the workflow event dropdown to add it. Perhaps I'm missing something.

Website sources are stored as eZ extension. Each extension is in SVN repository. Just needed to be enabled in global settings.

Each developer has well-prepared linux VM with eZ and MySQL with initial DB (clean for the first time). Also, staging VM has the same config.

Adding content classes/objects is done on staging DB. When something significant added - developer uses sync shell script and gets latest version of DB. After the milestone the DB is uploaded to production server.

SVN repository always has development version committed, so any developer can checkout project extension(s) and have site ready to run. This concerns project settings.

For deployment SVN is used: just usual checkout from specified repository URL as a step of installation/deployment shell script. Script then uses "undocumented feature" of eZ settings files - any content can be appended to the end of settings files and it is OK. So, script appends deploy-target-specific data to specified files, like DB info, debug=off, etc..

This project it rather unique as unlike the usual functionally improvements and bug fixes that happen under the hood the results of this will be very apparent and effect all eZ Publish users.

As I stated in an earlier blog post it's important to look at changes in terms of how they will improve task completion.

In the same post I suggest that the functionality that is most used by content editors should be given a greater priority.

I'm not sure that any of the items I've listed are that large. In fact fixing the HTML and the JS validation should be pretty straight forward and improve usability considerably.

I couldn't agree more. This isn't just an eZ problem though: just about every CMS seems to suffer from the 'you users are just going to have to learn this' syndrome - and users respond by avoiding updating their sites. In a lot of organisations the job of editing content on the website seems to get dumped on those who are unable to say no, HR assistants, work experience kids...
So, and ideal CMS admin interface would allow any irrelevant stuff to be hidden - 'Object States' are really useful, but for a casual editor seeing stuff like that is likely to cause mild panic. And it should allow object labels to be customised easily to suit the organisation, it should be easy to label 'articles' as 'stories' if the user organisation is a newspaper or TV company as that's the terminology they are used to.

I think if OpenSocial dashboards were implemented the ability to set a default layout for each role would be a required feature.

What I do like about OpenSocial is that the users will be able to customise the layout and what is display to meet their own needs. Also the widgets are portable across all OpenSocial consumers.

As I mentioned it would have many applications beyond the admin interface dashboard.

If the Admin UI was gadget-based, it would have to have a default that works well for 90% of users who probably aren't interested or don't have the time to mess around with adding widgets? I guess it gives people options...

Would there still be an accessible alternative?

I'm not sure if you've played much with igoogle.com but you can add widgets for gmail and google reader and other items that require authentication.

I would love to see a new admin interface! I think that it's the single biggest issue with the whole system.
It makes sense to me having worked with it for a few years, but not to clients. It makes training a challenge, especially to have all the actions at the bottom of the screen. And being that there a half a dozen different ways to add an image, it makes some content tasks unnecessarily complex. And the Content structure tree needs some AJAX love, too.

I agree with you 100% on the cause but this has nothing at all to do with eZ Systems and should have been remedied in the editorial process.

The book is published by Packt and it is their responsibly to ensure that the end results are acceptable. In fact there are a number of names/roles that are listed in the credits that have let this book down. Many of these have "editor" as part of their title and should have read the book cover to cover and picked up on the most basic of issues.

Nice post Bruce.

The admin interface is at the core of content management. If the admin (front or back) can inspire creativity and productiveness then it will add greatly to the overall eZ Publish package.

The only way this can work is if the editors and content creators give their input to it.

After all it is their day job and hence they are the ones that feel the pain if we (eZ and us) get it wrong.

I am hoping eZ is listening to users and is thinking about the key editor user journeys they take and will build a user experience around that.

Also it is probably worth every partner contacting eZ with a client who they can talk to about their admin needs and alos crucially to test and refine the admin interface once eZ has created it.

I am really excited about the admin interface rework and have very high hopes for it. I also know that without our input it will not live upto those hopes.

This is a very good idea! I've seen the drupal 7 admin interface and it's very well thought. Nowadays, the eZ admin interface is a burden when comparing it with other CMS, especially Drupal !
